A Study on the Calligraphic Heritage of Cai Yong and the Calligraphic Origins of Cai Wenji

Abstract

 Cai Yong, a master of calligraphy in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, laid the foundation for the transformation of Han and Wei calligraphy with his calligraphic philosophy and brushwork system. As Cai Yong's sole cultural successor, Cai Wenji preserved the core of the Cai family's scholarly heritage during the devastating loss of Han-era texts, serving as a crucial link between Han and Jin calligraphic traditions. This study employs a combined approach of philology and calligraphy research to analyze Cai Yong's calligraphic system, examine the transmission mechanisms of the Cai family's scholarly lineage, investigate Cai Wenji's calligraphic activities, and reveal their profound connections through a stylistic comparison between her work and Cai Yong's calligraphy. The research demonstrates that Cai Wenji creatively transformed the Cai family's calligraphic traditions, setting the stage for innovations by later calligraphers such as Zhong Yao, and her historical significance warrants re-evaluation.
