Technique Embodying Art, Art Approaching Dao: The Three Aesthetic Realms of Seal Carving

Abstract

 In the system of classical Chinese aesthetics, skill (ji), art (yi), and Dao (dao) form a spiritual structure that progresses from the concrete to the abstract and ascends step by step. In seal carving, skill serves as the foundation, embodied in the mastery of such physical means as engraving techniques, character forms, and composition. Art acts as the core pivot: it is not only the generative approach for stylistic creation and artistic conception construction but also the sensible manifestation of Dao and the spiritual sublimation of skill. Dao represents the ultimate spiritual destination, unfolding in three dimensions: the reflection of cosmic order rooted in the unity of Heaven and humanity, the value symbol centered on the personality spirit implied in "mind-seal", and the realm of free creation epitomized by "traveling in the arts".
