Jin Nong's calligraphy and painting are celebrated for their archaic, unconventional and rugged style, shaped mainly by his temperament, artistic references, living environment, creative mentality and other factors. Jin Nong led a frustrated life with tortuous life trajectories. By examining the shifts in his life experience in three phases—his early years born into a wealthy family and pursuing learning in Wu Region, his middle age responding to the Erudite Ci Poetry Examination, and his later years selling calligraphy and paintings in Yangzhou—this paper expounds the pivotal role of shifts in life itinerary in the evolution of his painting and calligraphy creation.
